Hypnotherapy for ADHD & Concentration

ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER IN EVERYDAY LIFE

For people with attentional difficulties and those who struggle with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), everyday life can feel like an endless cycle of challenging tasks. You make it to your work meeting for which you prepared extensively, only to realize that you left your notes at home. Your friends and family are frustrated with your forgetfulness or inconsistency, even though you feel like you’re doing everything you can to make things work. Even more confusing, you may have a very high IQ, the best job or education, score extremely high on certain tests, and yet small tasks are left undone, items go missing, or things seem to constantly fall through the cracks.

Many of the world's greatest thinkers, inventors and entrepreneurs have had aspects of ADHD, and the ability to hyperfocus to the exclusion of the outside world has given them the advantage of being able to think outside of the box. For many people with ADHD, it can be hard to tap into the adaptive side of ADHD in the midst of the distractions of everyday life or when so many thoughts are going in so many directions that it’s difficult to focus on the best way forward. By integrating hypnosis with a variety of therapy techniques, our therapists help clients with ADHD to calm their minds, identify goals, mitigate procrastination, and implement a plan moving forward so they can enjoy more productive and satisfying lives.

INTEGRATIVE THERAPY FOR ADHD

Dr. Kimberly Fishbach and Dr. Demi Maglio are experts in the difficulties because of, and surrounding, ADHD. Their research and extensive training informs her unique approach to treating ADHD, which combines DBT, CBT, and mindfulness-based modalities to assist clients with strengthening their attentional networks and emotional control. While ADHD has neurological underpinnings, they treat their clients from a strength-based approach that helps them see their condition as a difference that has positive aspects, rather than a deficit. They also help to reinforce the idea that those struggling with ADHD can be equally, if not more successful, than their “normal” counterparts and to focus on the adaptive aspects of ADHD.

Dr. Fishbach’s approach is informed by her years of graduate research in ADHD. Her work involved identifying the mechanisms of change that underlie the efficacy of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) on ADHD symptoms. By disseminating the components of MBSR and assessing the neurocognitive impact of the individual techniques on each ADHD subtype, she has been able to pave the way for a highly effective, individualized, and holistic plan for her patients.

Dr. Maglio’s approach, on the other hand, is informed by her extensive training in neuropsychological and psycho-educational assessments for ADHD. This knowledge  helps her both conceptualize and treat ADHD from a multifaceted perspective. By combining objective assessments with her extensive training in cognitive-behavioral and solution-focused therapies, Dr. Maglio collaboratively works with clients to identify their strengths to improve attentional and emotional control in academic and work settings. In therapy, she also addresses comorbid psychological concerns related to the social stigma associated with ADHD, including performance anxiety, low self-esteem, and embarrassment.

In addition to teaching ADHD tools and strategies, both Dr. Fishbach and Dr. Maglio address the factors that often result in comorbid feelings of anxiety and/or depression. They focus on decreasing the internalized self-doubt, shame, and insecurities that can manifest from environmental pressures and faulty messages that portray those who struggle with ADHD as “lazy” or “incapable.” She also offers coping skills to increase resilience, self-compassion, and confidence.
