Smoking Cessation

Quitting smoking will be one of the hardest, and most rewarding, things you will ever do. Trying to quit and not succeeding makes us feel like a failure, and the fear that we can’t quit is often what holds us back. Instead of methods that promote fear of the consequences of smoking, Dr. Kass uses hypnosis to tap into a person’s own desire and motivation to quit while helping to remove any blocks to achieving this goal.

Dr. Kass’s approach to smoking cessation focuses on both the habit aspects and the psychological reasons that you smoke, and this knowledge is the key to change. He has an extensive background in addiction, serving as the Clinical Director of both The Dunes East Hampton, a private inpatient treatment center on Long Island, and the Realization Center, New York City’s largest addiction outpatient treatment center.

The truth is that you are probably already frustrated with yourself every time you smoke. The goal is always to enter this office expecting that you will no longer smoke after this session, and walk about feeling happy about your decision and confident that you will succeed in no longer smoking. Dr. Kass addresses uses his vast psychological knowledge to address resistances to quitting, such as your fears of failure, not having an outlet for stress, or gaining weight, and discuss if there are other contributing factors such as anxiety, depression, or difficulties in your relationship. In the end, it is about feeling better and ending the frustration - not just quitting smoking.

Ample research supports hypnosis as an effective tool for smoking cessation. Evidenced-based research has demonstrated the effectiveness of hypnosis for smoking cessation over other methods such as that it is more than 2x greater than self-care methods, more than 2x greater than nicotine gum and 3x greater than physician interventions where the physician offered more than counseling (Viswesvaran & Schmidt, 1992).
