Relationships are what can bring us joy in life, allow us to better understand ourselves, and help us through difficult times. Many of us, however, have difficulty maintaining friendships and romantic relationships, because of fear of disappointment, rejection, or that we will become too reliant on them. We get out of one bad relationship, just to get into a similar dynamic with a different friend or partner.
Dr. Lavelle’s main area of interest is relationships and how they impact our functioning. She has conducted extensive research in the area of relationships, with a special interest in how relationships recover from breaches in trust and how our personalities affect those choices. Her dissertation examined the impact of betrayal on a relationship, and how attachment style and dependency play into our reactions to it. She has been an adjunct professor at Adelphi University and Brooklyn College where she taught classes on gender and multicultural psychology and incorporates her knowledge of gender and culture into her practice.
Dr. Lavelle’s approach to working with people struggling with relationship or sexual difficulties is to help them face their fears and understand the reasons why they push people away or attract the wrong people. Hypnosis is incorporated to help a person better understand their blocks, love fearlessly, and connect with others in a more authentic way.
She encourages honesty and openness, helping a person to communicate their needs in a way that encourages a bond instead of blaming or pushing others away. She also helps them understand when to walk away from relationships that are hurting them more than helping them so they can invite better relationships into their lives.
